DAY FOUR FROM THE COUCH: QUOTABLE QUOTES AND QUALI GOES QUICKLY

Just like that, qualifying at the 1/8 World Champs is half done. Just three more rounds tomorrow to set the ladder for Friday and Saturday's racing.

Today, three quotable quotes caught my eye/ear, so I figured why not try to analyse the day through the lense of these quotes. Come along for the ride, and let me know if I succeed.

1: "Bring it in this lap....no, next lap. Someone farted down here and I can't breathe." Britani Garrison

The quote: I talked yesterday about enjoying Mike Garrison's reflections on the race, and this pearler came from his FB page today, quoting his wife/partner/pit crew Britani from a mid-race pit stop comms. It's a fun story and you should find Mike's page and read the whole thing.

The analysis: Pit stops, and the length of a fuel stint is shaping up as a huge, potentially decisive factor in this race. On the one hand we have the raw speed of Ronnefalk (topping Q1) and Ongaro (topping Q3) who are stopping once during the ten-minute qualifiers, and on the other the no-stop strategy of drivers like Mason Fuller (topping Q2), Chase Lemieux, Ryan Maifield, Spencer Rivkin (all with top three runs). Somewhere in the middle is the usual king of fuel mileage, Dakotah Phend who has twice flamed out on the final lap, putting him on something of a quali tightrope and possibly forced into conservative choices tomorrow.

All this matters a lot in quali, where a fuel stop costs in the order of 6+ seconds. That's a heap to make up. But with an eye on Saturday, it matters a whole lot more - with a potential two-stop disadvantage over the full 60 minutes for anybody on a 7 1/2 minute fuel strategy. This could very quickly become a decisive factor, particularly if the likes of Ronnefalk or Ongaro get stuck in traffic while trying to make up that difference.

Interestingly, the fuel mileage seems regional, with most (not all) of the top US drivers going the whole run, while most (not all) of the top Euro drivers are making the stop. Curious.

2: "What a battle between Caleb Noble and Bruno Coelho there..." Scotty Ernst

The quote: This one came in the live coverage, right at the end of Q2 for heat 12. Australia's Caleb Noble prevailed in a tight battle over five-time World Champ Bruno Coelho. That, plus a solid Q3 have Noble in a top 20 spot overnight. It's been an impressive run after a quiet seeding performance.

The analysis: That got me thinking about who is running well, in "beak-through performance" territory (like Noble) vs who among the pre-race favourites finds themselves in trouble mid-way through qualifying.

In the first category, there's a bunch. Mason Fuller is absolutely driving up to his full (excuse the pun) potential, Chase Lemieux is belying somewhat limited 1/8 experience to be a real threat, Noha Ben Mohammed continues to impress, and then the likes of Aydin Horne, Caleb Noble, Remy Bermudez, Daniel Kobbevik and Jonny Skidmore are right in the fight for direct Semi-final spots. In every case, that's impressive.

On the flipside, some very well-known names are deep on the quali list and cannot afford a mis-step tomorrow. Phend, we've mentioned. Boots. Tebo. Figueiredo. Heckert. Ogden. Wilson. Sutherland. Just some of those who have semi-final capability but find themselves a long way back at this point. Thursday, for some, is a crucially important day in this event.

One of the ways I think about a week long race like the World Champs is that it's a slow process of sifting through the contenders, and gradually ruling people out. Technically in a 1/8 race you can go from qualifying dead last all the way to the championship, but in practice the deeper into the week we get, the more people's genuine chances are ruled out. We aren't there yet, but the feeling of that sifting net is getting pretty real for some big names.

3: "It's all practice until the finals" Josh Pain

The quote: Australian duo Andrew Gillott and Josh Pain are hosting a daily live show each evening over on Andrew's FB page. It's a super fun, tongue-in-cheek daily show - check it out. This quote came when reflecting on their own performances this far, and anticipating racing their way forward to meet event goals.

The analysis: We talked earlier in the week, in our event preview, about how winning this race depends on a range of factors, but the main one is getting to the final in good shape and then having 60-minute speed. Some, like Ongaro and maybe Canas, are so confident in their quali performances that they can actually spend most of the week focussed on a 60-minute car, and 60-minute tyres. Others are just trying to "get in", and the ten-minute speed is all that matters at this point - the hour setup can wait.

Somewhere around Q4, that equation shifts. There are now some drivers who are already locked into a good starting spot in a semi with three good results. The likes of Mason Fuller (3,0,4), David Ronnefalk (0,2,6), and Chase Lemieux (4,3,2) are now free to focus entirely on long-run performance, free to explore tyre choice and setup compromises oriented to those long finals, secure in the knowledge they'll start in the first few rows of a semi final. That's a great spot to be in.

Others have two good runs. Or only one. Or maybe none. For some, it's not practice anymore. It's a tightrope.

So, to a degree, Pain is right - everything is just practice until the finals. That is more true for some than for others.

What a fabulous second day of qualifying awaits. Fuller? Ronnefalk? Ongaro? Lemieux? Or a "from the clouds" drive for someone like Phend or Canas or Boots that turns the whole thing upside down? Who gets TQ? Who gets the semi spots? Who has to race their way into Saturday with sudden death Friday finals? So many questions to be answered tomorrow.

Three rounds down. Three to go. Three quotable quotes. Three reflections. How'd I do? 😉
