A tough go of it at the 2026 Dirt Nitro Challenge

A tough go of it at the 2026 Dirt Nitro Challenge. Just when things felt like they were coming together in the finals, they slipped away. Congratulations to teammate Seth Vandalen on the double victory in 1:8th Pro Truggy, and Nitro Buggy. Also; congrats to fellow Arizonan Camden Lime on his first DNC win and Juan Carlos Canas on his E-Truggy victory.

Mike Truhe and I worked hard all weekend, we did get a TQ in 1:8th Pro Nitro Truggy but I was unable to convert in the main. The Tekno truggy, with JConcepts Reflex and Samurai RM.1 power was rocking for the main event. Things felt good…until a little bad luck while leading. I landed wrong and broke a rather simple item that usually does not happen. So, not finishing the final was a bit disappointing.

In the 1:8th Pro Buggy class, I needed to bump into the A-Main after some less than stellar qualifiers, but, there were some positives getting out on the track for a bit more track time. We got the NB48 2.2 really good and ready for the main.

In the buggy final, I was able to get a good start and just paced the leaders and felt out the track and conditions. I kept moving up and getting more and more comfortable as the race was going on. I found myself racing with Seth, Juan Carlos, Camden Lime as we all worked our way up in the field. Truhe was getting the pit work done and things were going well. I was able to move into 2nd during pit exchanges and it felt like a winnable race for the first time all weekend.

To separate ourselves in pit lane, we went one extra lap. It proved to be a bit fatal and I ran out of fuel with about a 1/4 of the lap to finish and to make pit lane. So, my race was over for all intents and purposes. Overall, a bit cursed in main events during the weekend. Again, congrats to Seth on the big victory.

In the E-Classes, I didn’t quite feel the speed or drivability in the mains and just battled for what was available. I sat in 3rd the majority of the 1:8th Pro E-Buggy main but gave up that position toward the end to finish 4th overall. Not what I was looking for, but what I had to accept. Congrats to Camden for the start to finish win.

In the 1:8th Pro E-Truggy class, I felt I would be fine in the main. Of all the vehicles, this one felt the best in the A-warmup. I just made a compound change to green for the cooler temperature main and glued the inserts to the wheel. This might have been a mistake and I fell to 7th after what I felt was a winnable class. The Coyote electronics were very good all weekend in the class, I could have not asked for more in connection with the FlySky radio system. Congrats to Juan in this one, he was pretty flawless.

Thanks to the Tekno RC Team, the RM2 pit area and friends, along with Jason, Paul, and Hannah handling the JConcepts team and media duties. Thanks for helping make us fast and looking good. Also, thanks to Troy Hansen and Nick Wautlet from A-Main Hobbies for all the help and trackside support.
